Nah, I think it feels faster, and apps (though obviously not Qt apps) seem to generally launch faster. For a real-world example, I'd point you to Bluefish

Lightweight - Bluefish uses on startup 40%-45% of the memory that other editors such as Quanta and Screem use, and during a full session closer to 33% of what these other editors use.

Aside from that, there appears to be less trying-to-feel-like-Windows (by default), though it's a lot more similar now than a few years ago (but KDE has that, too) -- especially under Ubuntu, Gnome "just works" really well.

Disclaimer: I haven't been bothered to try KUbuntu. It works fine for me as is, and seeing as Ximian is a big part of my (IT) life, it makes sense to stick with Gnome.
